Dr. Huy Nguyen

BIO

Dr. Huy V. Nguyen is a board-certified ophthalmologist and Retina Specialist. He grew up in Orange County, where he graduated as Valedictorian from Troy High. He then graduated cum laude with High Honors from Harvard University with a degree in Chemical and Physical Biology, where he also won Harvard’s highest thesis prize. He then completed his medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. There, for his research on stem cell modeling of retina diseases, he was awarded a Research to Prevent Blindness Medical Student Fellowship, given to only four students nationwide, as well as the Behrens Memorial Prize, given to Columbia’s top student entering ophthalmology. He completed his medical internship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai St. Lukes-West, where he was recognized by his peers as Intern of the Year. He then completed his ophthalmology residency at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts Eye and Ear, where he was awarded the Heed Fellowship, the highest honor for an ophthalmology resident nationwide. He finally returned to California to complete his Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship at Stanford University, one of the top programs in the country, where he honed his skills in adult and pediatric retina. There, he also served on faculty as a Clinical Instructor, where he taught and mentored Stanford medical students and residents.

Dr. Nguyen believes strongly in the promise of research to move his field forward. He has won 7 highly competitive research fellowships at Harvard, Columbia, and Stanford, which has led to over 25 peer-reviewed research articles and book chapters and many presentations at national and international conferences. He actively reviews manuscripts for three active retina journals, participates in several clinical trials, and attends multiple retina-focused meetings a year to maintain offering the latest cutting-edge therapies for the treatment of retinal disease.

Dr. Nguyen’s expertise lies in the treatment and management of vitreoretinal disease, which includes age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, retinal tears, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, retinal vein occlusions, and retinal inflammation. He strongly believes that everyone deserves the highest quality care while being treated with respect and compassion.

Dr. Nguyen is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the American Medical Association. He is also fluent in Vietnamese.

In his spare time, Dr. Nguyen enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, playing tennis, hiking, and looking for the perfect bowl of pho.
